The relationship between art and medicine has a long history that continues, urgently, into the present. Our panel of experts share their experiences and insights, which will take us from the clinic to the city, from the hospital to the museum. The panel showcase some of our ongoing work at USC that leverages art and medicine to confront contemporary issues across health, culture, and society. |

Dr. Andrew T. Guzman is USC’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic AffairsHe holds the Shelly and Ofer Nemirovsky Provost’s Chair and is a Law and Political Science Professor. He is the first Latinx Provost to hold the position at USC. Provost Guzman previously served as Dean of the Gould School of Law. |

Josh Kun
is Vice Provost for the Arts at USC, and Professor and Chair in Cross-Cultural Communication at the USC Annenberg School. His books include Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America; Songs in the Key of Los Angeles; Double Vision: The Photography of George Rodriguez, and several others. As a curator his projects and exhibitions have appeared with The Los Angeles Public Library, LACMA, The Getty Foundation, California African American Museum, The Grammy Museum, and more. As an artist his work has appeared with SFMOMA, Prospect New Orleans, and Steve Turner Gallery. He is the recipient of a Berlin Prize, an American Book Award, and in 2016 was named a MacArthur Fellow." |

Kate Langrall Folb, M.Ed.
, is director of Hollywood, Health & Society (HH&S), a program of the USC Norman Lear Center, and a veteran for more than 25 years in the entertainment education field. At HH&S, she leads a team of public health and media professionals to connect entertainment content creators with experts in health, science, safety and security to ensure accuracy in their depictions. Over her career she has overseen over 10,000 consultations with top TV shows and movies in the U.S. and abroad on topics ranging from HIV to climate change to structural racism. Her work has been funded by government agencies including the CDC and the National Institutes for Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation. |

Assal Habibi, PhD
Associate Research Professor of Psychology
Director of the Center for Music, Brain and Society, USC
Assal Habibi
is an Associate Research Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Center for Music, Brain, and Society at USC. Her interdisciplinary research explores the impact of the arts, with a particular focus on music, on health and human development. She investigates how innate biological factors and experiential learning shape the development of cognitive, emotional, and social abilities across the lifespan. She has been a principal investigator on several innovative studies, including projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). An expert in electrophysiological and neuroimaging methods, her work extensively employs longitudinal and cross-sectional models to examine the effects of integrating music-based activities into
school curricula and elder care, especially for those from underserved communities. Her research not only highlights the essential role of the arts in education but also explores the therapeutic potential of music for individuals across different age groups, including the elderly. |

Carolyn C. Meltzer, MD, is the Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the May S. and John H. Hooval Dean's Chair in Medicine. In this capacity, she oversees 26 basic and clinical academic programs and 16 major research institutes and seeks to address complex problems in healthcare - through innovation in education, clinical care, research and community partnerships. |

Dr. Pamela Schaff, MD, PhD
Professor of Medical Education, Family Medicine, and Pediatrics (Educational Scholar) USC Keck School of Medicine
Dr. Schaff is a pediatrician and Director of the HEAL (Humanities, Ethics, Art, and Law) and MS in Narrative Medicine Programs at USC KSOM. She was a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Humanities and Arts Integration Committee, charged with determining and advancing the role of the humanities and arts in medical education and physician development. She holds a PhD in literature and creative writing from USC. In addition to teaching in the MD and Narrative Medicine Programs, Dr. Schaff designs curriculum that integrates arts and humanities instruction in courses, clerkships, and electives through all four years of the medical school curriculum. |
